Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System - Historian Jim Phillips

15

Historian Jim Phillips will present “Lost Treasures of Mississippi and Alabama” on Wednesday, July 20 at 12 noon in the Meeting Room of the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System.

Phillips will discuss both the lost and rediscovered treasures of Mississippi and Alabama from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He will cover historical events such as the Boaz Whitfield antebellum gold coin hoard discovered in 1926 near Demopolis, AL; the missing 5ft. tall-jeweled gold cross from the early 1700s French settlement on Dauphin Island, AL; the lost antebellum treasures of the old Mississippi River mansions; the valuable late 1880s and early 1900s Hutchinson style soda bottles; and many more.

Phillips will also display his mobile museum of 1700s and 1800s artifacts from Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee.

People are encouraged to bring in old bottles, coins, tokens, or paper money for Phillips to evaluate for free at the end of his presentation.

The event is free and open to the public.

The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System.
