U.S. Representative Trent Kelly has announced the appointment of Shaw Prewitt from Shannon, Mississippi, to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Members of Congress nominate candidates each year to U.S. service academies, which train young people for leadership roles in the Armed Forces and provide academic education. “Each year, members of Congress may nominate candidate to the U.S. service academies. These institutions prepare young men and women to become leaders in the U.S. Armed Forces while receiving a top-tier education.”
Shaw Prewitt attended South Pontotoc High School between 2022 and 2024 before moving on to the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, where he is taking Advanced Placement and dual-credit courses.
Prewitt’s athletic achievements include training in mixed martial arts and competing in wrestling, powerlifting, and football during his time at South Pontotoc High School. At his current school, he started its wrestling team and serves as captain.
Beyond academics and athletics, Prewitt has taken on several leadership positions such as Honorary President of the Mississippi State Society Children of the American Revolution, County Representative for American Legion Boys State, Historian of the Indigenous Student Alliance, Eagle Scout with Boy Scouts of America Troop 12, Mississippi Senate Page for Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hoseman, and U.S. Senate Page for Senator Roger Wicker.
His community service includes volunteering through his Eagle Scout Project “Beds for Kids,” participation in MSMS Volunteer Service Program activities, involvement with Tunnel to Towers Foundation projects, contributions to “Tales from the Crypt,” as well as work with St. James Catholic Church’s Lift Teen Youth Group.
Trent Kelly has represented Mississippi’s 1st District in Congress since 2015 after succeeding Alan Nunnelee. He was born in Union, Mississippi in 1966 and currently resides in Saltillo. Kelly holds a BA (1989) and JD (2010) from the University of Mississippi.
