U.S. Representative Trent Kelly has announced the appointment of Samuel Bain from Oxford, Mississippi, to the U.S. Naval Academy. Each year, members of Congress nominate candidates for the service academies, which prepare individuals for leadership roles in the U.S. Armed Forces while providing a high-quality education.

Bain is a notable student-athlete at Oxford High School, playing offensive line on the varsity football team and competing in wrestling’s 285-pound weight class. His athletic accolades include receiving the Tomorrow’s Team Award for offensive line and Newcomer of the Year Award in wrestling.

Academically, Bain is a member of both the National Honor Society and Beta Club and has held various leadership positions. He served as executive director of the Federalist Party at Mississippi Boys State, chaplain of the Children of the American Revolution, and leader of his school’s Football Player’s Bible Study. Additionally, he participated in the Trent Lott Leadership Institute’s Emerging Leaders Conference.

Bain is also active in his church community through First Baptist Church Oxford’s Mission Committee and Outreach Program and has been involved in mission trips to Olsztyn, Poland, and Custer, South Dakota.

“I’ve been wanting to attend the Naval Academy since I was in fifth grade,” Bain stated. “The Naval Academy was my dream college because I’ll be able to serve once I graduate and get a fantastic education as well.”

Congressman Trent Kelly represents Mississippi’s First Congressional District and holds several key positions including Chairman of the Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces for the House Armed Services Committee.
