Mississippi State University announced on April 24 that its softball program continues to foster a strong team culture influenced by head coach Samantha Ricketts’ Samoan heritage. The program has attracted several players of Samoan descent, contributing to the team’s ongoing success.
The connection between Ricketts and her roots in Leone, Samoa, has played a significant role in shaping the environment at Nusz Park. Over the past decade, Mississippi State’s roster has consistently included at least one player with Samoan heritage, with as many as four teammates sharing this background at once. Currently, sisters Kiarra Sells and Kalani Sells are on the roster alongside former player Matalasi Faapito, who now serves as a graduate assistant after appearing in 137 games for the Bulldogs.
Ricketts said, “I think, for myself, I really see the connection between the Samoan culture and team environment. It’s a very kind of quiet respect. Respect your elders and leaders, your team first, family first, all based on love and faith. I think that’s something that works well within our program.” This approach has helped create an atmosphere where all athletes feel welcomed and valued.
During her tenure at Mississippi State, Ricketts was appointed head coach of the American Samoan National Team. Several current and former Bulldogs—including Kiarra Sells, Kalani Sells, Matalasi Faapito, Fa Leilua, and Chloe Malau’ulu—were named to her initial player pool as they prepare for qualification matches ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Kiarra Sells said about representing American Samoa: “I think it’s an amazing opportunity. I think it’s really great to be able to put on for our home country.” Meanwhile Faapito added about playing under Ricketts: “I wouldn’t want to play for anyone else… she treats me like her daughter… She holds me accountable and she knows [Kiarra] and I have high standards…”
Mississippi State will host its annual Samoan Heritage Day on Sunday while facing No. 20 LSU at Nusz Park. The game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. Central Time start with coverage available on SEC Network+.
