Mississippi State University defeated Louisiana State University 9-8 in a dramatic baseball game on April 26, clinching a series victory during Super Bulldog Weekend at Dudy Noble Field.
The game was highlighted by freshman Jacob Parker’s grand slam in the seventh inning, which tied the score and energized the crowd of 15,289 fans. The attendance marked the third-largest on-campus crowd in NCAA history. The win is significant for Mississippi State as it keeps them on track for potential postseason play at their home field.
Parker described his pivotal moment: “I kind of got out in front of a breaking ball and just poked at it.” Head coach Brian O’Connor said he trusted Parker to face LSU’s left-handed reliever Cooper Williams, stating, “I’m going to stay with [Parker] because he has a chance to run one out of here.” After hitting the grand slam, Parker admitted, “I blacked out, so I really don’t know what all happened, but it was pretty cool.”
Freshman pitcher Jack Bauer also played a key role by providing relief from the fifth inning onward. He struck out eight batters over nearly four innings and limited LSU’s scoring. O’Connor praised Bauer’s performance: “Here is a freshman pitching on Super Bulldog Weekend in front of one of the largest crowds in college baseball history… It showed why he is here at Mississippi State.”
Graduate Noah Sullivan delivered an RBI single in the eighth inning that gave Mississippi State its first lead since early in the game. Sullivan credited his earlier struggles for helping him adjust: “All night, I’d been late to the heater. So I knew at some point I was going to get the fastball… made a good swing.” Relief pitcher Maddox Webb secured the final outs after LSU hit a solo home run in the ninth.
The victory set off celebrations among fans and players alike. Sullivan reflected on its significance: “This is why you come to Mississippi State… That was the craziest fan experience I’ve ever seen.” Parker added about his experience with supporters: “It was awesome. The fans made that moment so special for me. It was surreal.”
